Geography

Located in south-west Switzerland, the Lake Geneva Region is bordered by Lake Geneva, France and the borders of the cantons of Geneva, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Bern and Valais.

The Lake Geneva Region (Canton Vaud) is an area of 3,212 km2 and is one of the largest cantons in Switzerland. It shares its borders with France and five of Switzerland’s 26 cantons (Geneva, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Berne and Valais).


The canton consists of three geographical regions: the Jura range (15%), the Plateau (63%) and the Alps (22%). The lowest point is the Lake Geneva basin at 372 metres; the highest point is the Diablerets massif at 3,209 metres.

Total surface area: 3,212 km2 or 321'179 hectares or 1,220 sq. mi. (7.8% of Swiss territory)
Agriculture: 1'022 km2 or 102'248 hectares or 395 sq. mi.
Forest: 1'393 km2 or 139'310 hectares or 538 sq. mi.
Vineyards: 39 km2 or 3'856 hectares or 15 sq. mi.
