Echallens, the Swiss granary
The wheat fields in the centre of Gros-de-Vaud, the Bread House and the Wheat Trail constitute a cultural dimension for Echallens and its region. Didactic paths, farm markets: a region dedicated to rural tourism.
Located in the middle of fertile grounds, Echallens (616 m) is at the centre of the Lake Geneva Region granary. The village of Echallens is the county town of the region covering the area between Lausanne, Yverdon, Cossonay and Moudon.
The relief of this region is ideal for cycling paths and hikes, all of them marked. The Wheat Trail connects Echallens with Granges-Marnand, more than 40 km away. This didactic walk passes by wheat farms, mills and the Bread House, a bakery and a museum.
Other didactic paths have been arranged: Echallens is at the heart of a network of a hundred km of marked trails.
In July, over 130 craftsmen hold a huge traditional market every Thursday.
Rural tourism can be explored in Ferm'aventures, offering a night on straw and farm life. Soft tourism is entirely feasible by train: the Lausanne-Echallends-Bercher line serves the entire region.
